African and Inter-American human rights systems exchange in Banjul

FIAN International will facilitate a space for exchange between the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) and the Inter-American Human Rights Commission (IAHRC).

Talks will center around the human right to food and nutrition and human rights defenders, currently hotspots for the regions. The African and inter-American Commissions will exchange views ahead of and during the 59th Ordinary Session of the African Commission in Banjul, Gambia, scheduled for 21 October - 4 November. This exchange of views and experiences is expected to contribute to the general knowledge of both commissions; reinforce ties vis-a-vis social movements and; boost political support for the IAHRC, in view of the ongoing crisis

On this note, FIAN will organize a meeting with the Working Group on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights within the ACHPR and make a statement during the session on “Human Rights in Africa through the lenses of the Special Mechanisms of the ACHPR, with the focus on Women.”

The organization will take part in the Forum on the Participation of NGOs in the 59th Ordinary Session, which will be organized by the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) from October 17 – 19. IACHR Commissioner Margarette May Macaulay will join all activities, together with a representative of the Global Convergence of Land and Water Struggles - West African Platform.

On the occasion of the African Year of Human Rights, which has a particular and deserved focus on the rights of women, the African Commission, the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (also known as the Children’s Committee) and the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the African Court) have synchronized their commemorative October/November sessions to mark this historic occasion.
